The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) screen wall commemorates the men and women buried in the Cemetery who died as a result of the First and Second World Wars. When the Memorial was originally commissioned it was sited at Sheffield’s City Road Cemetery. The General Cemetery was not thought to be a suitable location because it was such an area of neglect at that time. Due to the tremendous work done by volunteers in improving the landscape over the last 20 or more years the CWGC decided that the Memorial should be placed near to the graves of the men and women it honours. It was re-sited at the General Cemetery in 2015.

You can read more about those who died in the First World War who are commemorated in the Cemetery in the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust’s publication A Life Too Soon Done and about the history of Sheffield General Cemetery in the SGCT publications For the Living and the Dead, Sheffield General Cemetery – Then & Now, and Recollections of a Former Occupant.
