Women worked alongside their fathers and husbands in the confectionary trades, in some cases as managers and proprietors of the businesses, although their contributions were not always fully recognised. As the confectionery trade in Sheffield expanded women were increasingly employed outside the home. You can read more about their route towards at a degree of independence in Women in the Confectionery Trade. The Sheffield General Cemetery Trust book Sweet Remembrance here tells the story of leading Sheffield confectioners, including George Bassett and Charles Butler, and their links with Sheffield General Cemetery.
