Sheffield General Cemetery is the final resting place of over 86,000 people. Around 40% of these people do not have a memorial to mark where they are buried. The burial research team at Sheffield General Cemetery Trust work through archival material and records to uncover the stories that are hidden and, in some cases, nearly forgotten.
When you walk through the Cemetery, you will come across four remembrance plaques that have been installed thanks to funding from The National Lottery players. These remembrance plaques mark four significant hidden stories within the Cemetery. You can read more about them below.
If you visit the Cemetery, make sure to take a good look around and think about the lives and stories under your feet.
