Type: History & Heritage , Nature , Talk
As part of our 190th birthday celebrations, join us for a fascinating talk exploring the origins and design of Sheffield General Cemetery as a Victorian garden cemetery.
This talk, led by landscape historian Jan Woudstra, will delve into the work of Robert Marnock – the influential horticulturist and designer behind the Cemetery’s original layout. Known for his innovative approach to public landscapes, Marnock created a space that combined picturesque planting with a carefully considered network of paths, views and monuments.
This talk will explore how Sheffield General Cemetery reflects wider developments in 19th-century landscape design, as well as Marnock’s lasting impact on the Cemetery as both a burial ground and a public green space.
A fascinating insight into the history, design and legacy of one of Sheffield’s most distinctive historic landscapes.
Alongside the talk, enjoy a complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate or soft drink. Throughout the 190th birthday weekend, the Samuel Worth Chapel will also host a café, bookstall and People Power exhibition, open 10.00am-4.00pm each day, so you can explore our history, discover our stories and learn more about our future plans.
