Sheffield General Cemetery Trust is delighted to welcome La Cozna & Mary Hampton to the Samuel Worth Chapel for a spellbinding evening of contemporary folk.

La Cozna bring together Clémentine Ristord (bass clarinet, drone box), Benjamin Garson (electric guitar), Pierre-Antoine Despatures (double bass) and Nicolas Jacobée (vocals). Drawing on traditional French songs collected in the 20th century, the quartet reimagines these works for a modern audience. Once passed in whispers through kitchens and domestic spaces, these women’s songs tell stories of love, violence and freedom — rich with humour, drama and poetic intensity. In Ni Nuit Ni Jour, ambiguity and tension run through feverish, immersive soundscapes, alive with desire and darkness.

Mary Hampton is a folk singer, musician and composer whose work sits in the space between traditional song and art music. Influenced by Symbolism, experimental chamber music and folk traditions, her writing is at once fragile, desolate and darkly humorous — exploring the tensions between past and present, myth and reality, nature and civilisation. Described as “a rare talent” (The Guardian) and “brilliant and peculiar” (Acoustic Magazine), she was awarded a Paul Hamlyn Composer’s Award by Jarvis Cocker in 2017. Her releases include two acclaimed albums, alongside a series of EPs and singles.

A captivating evening of contemporary folk – intimate, atmospheric and richly evocative.
