A rare visit to Sheffield from legendary saxophonist and pioneer of free improvisation, Evan Parker for an entirely improvised solo performance celebrating the launch of The Heraclitean Two-Step, etc., his new 4 CD box set released to mark his 80th birthday. Evan will also present and reflect upon a selection of recordings important to him (more Krapp’s Last Tape than Desert Island Discs).
His solos use a variety of techniques (circular breathing, cross-fingering, split-tonguing) and a sensitivity to the acoustic properties of the performance space to produce music of great intensity, with dense repetitions, layered overtones and fractured melodic lines creating an illusion of polyphony. But this is no dry technical demonstration or abstract academic exercise: his music transforms temporal and spatial awareness to transcendent effect.
“Can you think of a better saxophone player? […] he really starts beyond somewhere even where you could get to and takes it from there, that’s the great thing about him. He is a giant, Evan, there is a consistent trajectory, that he has been carving year in, year out, it is a monumental thing”
